History of the Denton Black Chamber of Commerce
The Denton Black Chamber of Commerce was created in 1995 for the express purpose of helping with the Creation, Expansion and Proliferation of African American-owned businesses. During the summer of 1995 in the Barbershop of Billy and Raymond Redmon, a number of local Black businessmen and women were discussing the difficulties they were experiencing in growing and expanding their businesses.
While the efforts of the greater chamber were good, the specific interests of the African-American community were not at the top the list of issues for the Denton Chamber of Commerce. Earlier that year, the Denton Hispanic Chamber of Commerce also began. There were a number of discussions about the new chambers and whether their existence would increase the divide in the city along racial lines.
There used to be just one Chamber in town and it was especially hard for members of the minority community to get involved and make a difference in their community. The Denton Black Chamber of Commerce is a team of business people working together to have an impact within the African-American community in the City of Denton and Denton County.
